Abstract:The study sought to determine the factors affecting project sustainability in non-governmental organisations in Kenya. The study used a probability sampling technique in form of simple random sampling to draw a sample of 150 respondents from a target population of 240 who were staff members of Kwetu Home of Peace, Railway Children, Oxfam and Concern Worldwide, Amref Health Africa, and Care Kenya at their Nairobi premises. These were the staff who had direct or indirect interaction with the implementation of project sustainability initiatives. The study adopted a descriptive study to collect data from all the 150 respondents sampled using structured questionnaires. Data collected was analyzed using Quantitative data analysis including descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics involved use of frequencies and percentages. Multiple linear regression model and bivariate correlation were used as Inferential statistics. Results were presented in form of frequency distribution tables and pie charts. Qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis and presented in continuous prose form. The study was governed by four theories; Stakeholder Theory of Sustainability; The neoclassical sustainability theory; Modern Neoclassical theory of sustainability and New Systems theory of sustainability. The factors affecting project sustainability were deduced from the results of the study. The findings of the study revealed existence of a strong positive correlation between cost management, political factors and stakeholder involvement and the dependent variable while that of not-for-profit mission was negative.  The study established that stakeholder Participation and Not-For-Pofit Mission were significantly related to NGOs’ project sustainability. The R Squared value for all the variables was 0.869 indicating that the study results explained 86.9% of the total variation in Project Sustainability which can be attributed to unit change in the four independent variables. The study suggests that NGOs should partner with private sector organisations to get skilled manpower so as to make up for organisational constraints. The study recommends further research on Project Sustainability in general in NGOs rather than on the specific aspects of sustainability such as financial, environment and social sustainability.

Abstract:This study sought to investigate the adaptive and coping mechanisms of the pastoralists and their implications on Rift Valley fever control in Ijara Division, North Eastern Kenya.  It was cross sectional in design with a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The findings suggest that the characteristic instability of most rangeland environments inherently expose the pastoralists to vulnerabilities such as Rift Valley Fever outbreaks.  The pastoralists interface this instability with a diversity of adaptive and coping mechanisms most of which have implications on Rift Valley fever control. Study findings show that the youthful herders who move with cattle in search of ephemeral resources are more vulnerable to Rift Valley Fever disease than women and men because of the gender role specifications traditionally ascribed to them. The home-processed sheep fat which is widely used as ethno-medicine for RVF cure in humans revealed a pluralistic perspective in health seeking behavior of the pastoralists but it also had the potential of delaying access to conventional medicine thereby worsening the condition of RVF victims. Furthermore, although most cattle keepers shelter sick animals in the same human dwelling unit during RVF outbreak for fear of losing them to wildlife attacks and adverse weather conditions, the study showed that this sleeping arrangement can accelerate Rift Valley Fever Virus infection from the animal to humans through contact with animal body fluids. Finally, study participants concurred that induced mobility and disease risk aversion strategies as practiced by the pastoralists would be more useful in Rift Valley Fever control if backed up with effective surveillance and early warning system to enable the pastoralists avoid areas most affected by the epidemic. Public health awareness on Rift Valley fever, improved surveillance and effective early warning system are therefore recommended to provide the pastoralists with the necessary information to adopt appropriate and safe adaptive and coping mechanisms for control of the zoonotic disease.

Abstract:The purpose of this research was to establish the influence of strikes on the performance of employees in Public Hospitals in Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The study was guided by System theory, Vroom’s Expectancy theory, Hertzberg’s Two-Factor theory, Management theory and Schechner’s performance theory. Questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data from the employees, while in-depth schedules were used to collect qualitative data from the respondents.  The study was limited to Pumwani Maternity Hospital, a referral maternity hospital in Nairobi County with a target population of 400 employees. The study focused on the influence of communication, compensation, working environment and leadership style on employee performance. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 80 respondents from the study population of 400 employees at Pumwani Hospital. All the 80 respondents filled in and returned the questionnaires resulting in a response rate of 100%. Data from questionnaire were analyzed by both descriptive and inferential statistics with the help Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 21. Inferential statistics such as bivariate correlation and multiple linear regression was used to analyze data. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically through content analysis and presented in continuous prose. The study findings were presented using graphs; bar charts and pie charts and Tables. The findings indicated a positive correlation between the independent and dependent variables. The multiple regression model showed statistically significant relationships between Employee Communication, Employee Compensation, Working Environment, Leadership style and the dependent variable (employee performance) supported by p values of 0.01, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.025 respectively. The study established that 51.34% of the variations in employee performance were explained by strike (communication, employee compensation, working environment and leadership style). Study findings revealed that poor communication influence workers performance negatively. The study found a strong positive relationship between employee compensation and performance. The study established that the hospital had inadequate working facilities and equipment. The study found a strong positive relationship between work environment and performance. The study also found a strong positive relationship between leadership style and performance implying that leadership style had a direct impact on employee’s performance. The study recommends that Motivational leadership should be encouraged in place of authoritarian leadership style for better performance in public hospitals.

Abstract:Public access to healthy latrine in Bangli Regency in 2015 is still the lowest in Bali Province of 80.7%, the effort made since 2014 is by the Community-Based Total Sanitation Program through Stop Carelessly Defecation (BABS) pillar which is implemented by the District Health Office Bangli through Health Center (Puskesmas) in his work area. The objective of this study is to evaluate the Community-Based Total Sanitation program for the pillars of the Stop Carelessly Defecation (BABS) with the evaluation method of CIPP (Context, Input, Process & Product) and to generate strategy through SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threath). This evaluative research is a descriptive observational research, conducted in December 2017 in 12 Health Center (Puskesmas) with 63 respondents.
